Probably South German first half 18th century

An églomisé reverse glass depiction of the Adoration of the Magi, probably South German, first half 18th century

The composition and polychromy of this detailed and ornate scene indicate an origin in Southern Germany. It can be compared to a depiction of Saint Augustine in the Ryser collection attributed to Niklaus Michael Spengler (1700 Constance-1776 Darmstadt) who was active in the area around Lake Constance. The backing panel on the reverse of this depiction is inscribed in old handwriting "Segen ist der Mühe Preis" and bears figural sketches.
The silver leaf partially tarnished. Set into a wooden frame. 19 x 28 cm.
