An early Islamic mortar

Cast and chased bronze with sintered remnants of red pigment. Originally of cylindrical section, slightly rounded due to use, on a narrow bracket foot. Decorated with four raised triangular bosses above a finely chased calligraphic inscription. Base rounded due to use, several minor cracks to the rim, greenish corrosion. H 13.4, D 15 cm. Weight c. 5.3 kg.
Khorasan, presumably pre-10th century.
