An Islamic mortar

Engraved cast bronze with mottled patina, remnants of red pigment and verdigris. Cylindrical form with protruding upper rim. Decorated with two staggered rows of raised teardrop motifs and stylised engravings. The upper rim with a border of tendrils. With sinter and green corrosion, the upper rim warped, with older repaired cracks. H 12.5, D 14.5 cm, includes corresponding pestle, weight c. 4.5 kg.
Attributed to Khorasan/Iran, 10th - 13th C.
