A rare bracket clock made for the Ottoman market

Red lacquer and gilding on hardwood/oak corpus, brass and tin mountings, blued steel hands and glazing. Week-running with chiming on eight bells which can be set to four different melodies, hourly striking on an additional bell with on/off switch. The case glazed on all four sides, with domed lid and two side handles. The dial with Ottoman numerals and polychrome floral relief. The plate finely engraved with tendrils surrounding a central crescent moon. The dial engraved "Recordon Spencer & Perkins LONDON". Suspension of the chime defective. H 54, W 39.5, D 24.5 cm.

These clockmakers mentioned in: Baillie, Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World, 1966. Louis Recordon is documented between 1778 and 1824. In 1780 he filed a patent for a wind up pedometer. He also produced clocks for the Chinese market before retiring in 1796 (ibid. p. 265).
