An Alabaster Group of Christ and Saint John, Upper Rhine Region, second half 14th century

Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened. Minimal remains of former polychromy.. This appealing small-format work depicts the seated figure of Christ laying His hand upon the shoulder of His favourite disciple. Saint John in turn rests his head upon the saviour's shoulder and holds His right hand. The iconography used in this intimate group was developed in the 14th century and is derived from depictions of the Last Supper
