Lower Rhine Region 2nd half 15th century

A carved wooden figure of the Virgin and Child, Lower Rhine Region, second half 15th century

Carved in the round, the hollowed out area in the reverse of the piece filled with a separate block from the head to the feet. Extensively overpainted older polychromy.. A figure of the Virgin designed for a frontal viewpoint. She stands in contrapposto holding the nude Christ Child in Her left arm over Her hip, the sceptre in Her right hand lacking. The gently swaying pose of the figure is accentuated by the drapery of Her robes.
The Child's left arm replaced. Wear with minor losses. Mounted on a wooden plinth. Height 69 cm (without plinth).
