Probably Swabia Anfang 15. Jahrhundert
An early 15th century carved wooden figure of Saint John, presumably Swabian
Carved in the round, the reverse only partially worked. With partially overpainted older polychromy.. A figure of Saint John standing with feet together and turned towards the left. He holds his lowered head in his right hand in a gesture of mourning, indicating that the figure originally formed part of a crucifixion scene.
Losses to the polychromy. Minor wear throughout. Mounted on an older moulded wooden plinth. Height 41 cm (without plinth).
The former collection of Emil Georg Bührle, Zurich (with a label to the back of the plinth). - Presumably acquired in 1992 and subsequently in a South German private collection.
