Franconia early 16th century

An early 16th century Franconian carved wood figure of Saint Barbara

Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened and hollowed out. With extensive remains of former polychromy, presumably dating from the early 20th century.. A depiction of the crowned Saint Barbara standing in contrapposto designed for a frontal viewpoint. She holds her attribute, the chalice, in her right hand. The quality of this work is especially evident in the partially free-standing elements of the saint's hair and the rendering of the cloak worn drawn across her body and slung over her right hand, where it falls in deeply carved vertical folds. This Franconian sculpture displays strong stylistic parallels to works from the circle of Veit Stoss.
A wedge-shaped replacement to the front of the plinth, the left hand probably replaced. Wear and losses to the crown. Height 106 cm.
