South German um 1520

A South German “lüsterweibchen” chandelier with a figure of a lady, around 1520

Wood, carved in the round, the reverse only partially worked. With older and mainly original polychromy and gilding.. This chandelier made from carved wood and antlers is formed from a bust of a lady in a golden gown and a tall head dress with a drapery that falls diagonally across her chest. She is depicted in the typical frontal viewpoint used in these kinds of chandeliers. The high quality of the carving is particularly evident in the careful rendering of the facial features and the sculpture's finely worked details, which are further accentuated by the polychromy and gilding of the gown and bonnet that has been applied over incised flower and diaper patterns.
Minimal wear. Bust 43 x 30 x 19 cm, length with antlers 98 cm..
