Bavaria around 1700

A Bavarian carved boxwood figure of Saint Michael, around 1700

Carved in the round and partially free-standing.. The saint is depicted in a dynamic pose standing upon a figure of the devil, holding a silver sword in his raised right hand. The fine quality of the work's carving is particularly evident in the depiction of the Roman style armour with its plumed helmet and fluttering cloak.
Two losses to the cloak, hairline cracks to the reverse. The wings loosely attached. Mounted on a newer wooden plinth. Height 43 cm (without plinth).
