Jacob More

The Tomb of the Horatii and Curiatii on the Via Appia near Albano

Watercolour on paper. 53.3 x 73 cm.
Framed under glass.

The so-called tomb of the Horatii and Curiatii is located on the Via Appia near Albano. It is constructed as a rectangular plinth with four rounded cones at the corners and a fifth larger cone in the centre. It is unclear for whom the monument, which is based on Etruscan forms, was originally intended. This sheet depicts three shepherds resting beside the tomb with a donkey in a hilly, wooded landscape. The piece was apparently once signed and dated 1787 on the reverse, as this is noted in catalogue entries from 2007, but this is no longer evident. It may have been mounted on card after the sale.
