Hugo Mühlig

The Return from a Winter Hunt

Oil on canvas. 55.5 x 81 cm.
Signed lower right: Hugo Mühlig. Dated lower left: Schrabach 1901.

The present work belongs to a group of paintings on the theme of the “return from the hunt”, which Mühlig created several variations of. In contrast to his depictions of the start of a hunt, which often show a foggy early morning atmosphere, these pictures of the return from the hunt take place in the midday sun.

In the present work, the artist captures the play of sunlight and shadow on the glittering snow in a charming scene. The image is enlivened by a variety of figures, the most prominent of which being the hunter and beater boy carrying two rabbits over his shoulder. Figures like the one striding into the centre of the work and the beater boy were two of Mühlig's favourite motifs and can often be found in his hunt pictures.
