A square Ao Kutani dish. Yoshida kiln. Kanazawa prefecture. Early 19th century

With indented corners and lobed sides, decorated in dark green, overglaze-blue, purple, a little black, yellow and iron red at the centre with a graceful kirin in a landscape, at the rim with lobed panels with a pair of leaves encircling a shippô pattern and a fruit-like ornament at the corners, reserved from a dark green ground with a pattern of pine needles, brown-glazed rim, to the underside plum blossom branches. At the base kiln marks and a seal in black on a yellow ground reading kinwaka?.
Height 5 cm; width 24 cm

The Yoshidaya kiln was established in 1823 or 1824 with the aim of reviving Old Kutani. In fact, the 17th-century square dishes with indented corners were newly produced with difference that the sides were lobed. Also, the seal marks were imitated.
