A boxwood netsuke of Fukurokuju with a child. Early 19th century

Standing with hands crossed in front of his chest and hidden in his long sleeves, he wears a sling over his high skull in which a karako sits with a fan at the back, ready to pull up the sling to tease the god of luck. The erotic association of the shape is clear. Powerfully carved and engraved, the dark staining rubbed by extensive use.
