A wood and metal netsuke of a cockerel on a drum. Around 1800

With very fine plumage and long tail feathers, seated on a drum with an inscription in black lacquer on the underside reminiscent of the seals on, for example, Chinese porcelain. Very fine shakudo nails inserted to attach the drum skins, the eyelets of shibuichi.
Height 3.3 cm

The characters to the drum's underside are taken from a poem by Kono Kunikazu.

"Moss grows on the complaints drum,
the chickens are not worried."

In ancient times, beating this type of drum served both for roll call during wartime and to call for public attention in case of complaint. The rooster sitting on such an unused drum therefore symbolizes peace and contentment.
