David Teniers the Younger

Rustic Kitchen Still Life with a Couple

Oil on panel (parquetted). 50 x 60.5 cm.
Signed lower right: D. Teniers.

David Teniers the Younger had a decisive influence on the development of the peasant genre in 17th century Flemish art. His taverns, drinking card players, musicians and flirtatious couples in rustic interiors, which he captured with a secure brushstroke, brilliant power of observation, and humour, were as popular as collector's items in their time as they are today. In 1650, the Spanish governor of the southern Netherlands, Archduke Leopold Wilhelm, appointed Teniers as court painter in Brussels, where he lived until the end of his life.
Margret Klinge identifies this kitchen interior as a characteristic example of Teniers' Brussels period due to its painterly execution and the effective use of light.
