Probably Upper Rhine-Region around 1380/1390

A carved wooden figure of the Virgin and Child, presumably Upper Rhine Region, around 1380/1390

Presumably chestnut, carved in the round. With minimal remains of former polychromy.. A finely carved figure designed for a frontal and slightly lowered viewpoint. The work shows the Virgin standing in contrapposto holding the Christ Child in Her left arm above Her hip. She raises Her cloak slightly with Her right hand, creating a lively play of drapery which contrasts with the balanced S-shaped curve of the figure.
The Child's left arm reattached. Minimal wear, some older insect damage. Two drilled holes on the reverse. Height 40 cm.
