German late 16th century

Two late 16th century German carved wood reliefs with scenes from the Passion

Carved wood with remnants of earlier polychromy. Two depictions of scenes from the Passion of Christ under architectural surmounts. One with Peter's denial of Christ with the cockerel in the upper left on a column and one with Christ wearing the Crown of Thorns. The reliefs presumably once formed part of an altarpiece dedicated to the Passion.
With wear throughout. Each with a small breakage on the reverse, backed with canvas, the right edge of each a later addition. Each 41 x 33 x 6 cm.

Provenance

Private collection, Rhineland.
