The Berlin artst Julius Helfft was a pupil of Wilhelm Schirmer at the Academy of Fine Arts and stayed in Italy between 1843 and 1847, visiting, amongst others, Florence. The present impressive view depicts the interor of the Florentine church of San Miniato al Monte, situated on a hill outside the city. The basilica was erected in the 11th century and is one of the most beautiful Romanesque churches of the city. Helfft depicts the interior of the church with its main apse, populated by monks and participants of a mass.
