Max Kaus

Weisse Lilien
Probably c 1934

Oil on canvas 101 x 80.5 cm Framed. Signed 'MKaus' (joined) in red lower right. Verso signed and titled 'MAX KAUS Stilleben Weisse Lilien' on the canvas. - Minor surface soiling. Light craquelure in the pastose white areas.

This subtly arranged still life consisting of vases, textiles and lilies radiates a seemingly Far Eastern, meditative atmosphere with its tranquillity and its reserved colour scheme. The harmonious curves of the vases - both of which appear multiple times in Kaus's still lifes from this period - and the soft folds of the textiles stand in contrast to the pointed, projecting leaves and petals of the lilies. The gentle chromatic harmony of light yellow, white, grey, beige and rose is invigorated and grounded through the accents of deep red in the lower part of the picture.
