A Berlin silver plate made for the Grand Dukes of Mecklenburg Schwerin

Round, scalloped dish with a broad rim decorated with stylised acanthus and shellwork, with the crowned coat-of-arms of the Dukes of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. Stamped with the inventory no. 77 on the underside. D 30 cm. Weight 946 g.
Marks of Johann George Hossauer, c. 1837.

This plate originates from a very extensive service that Grand Duke Paul Friedrich von Mecklenburg-Schwerin commissioned from Hossauer around 1837 - and which was still in Mecklenburg family possession until the 1970s.
Paul Friedrich (1800 - 1842) had been married since 1822 to Princess Alexandrine of Prussia, the sister of the later Emperor Wilhelm I. The designation "FIDC." next to the marks on the underside stands for the Latin phrase "fidei commissum" - entrusted to fidelity - and initially ruled out a sale or inheritance outside the family. Surviving items from the service are today housed in the art collection of the Staatliches Museum Schwerin, among other locations.

Provenance

Acquired in 1975; Private collection, Lower Saxony.
