1844 – 1847, the decor “hausmalerei“ after 1848.

The scenes depict the revolutionaries' barricade against the Prussian troops, which reached its climax on 18th March and the following night. Over two hundred civilians were killed during the uprising. One of Adolf Menzel's most famous paintings, now housed in the Kunsthalle Hamburg, shows the laying out of the dead of the March Revolution on the steps of the Deutscher Dom at Gendarmenmarkt on 22nd March 1848.
