A bronze figure of a hussar on horseback

Finely chased bronze model with slightly shimmering brown patina on a white veined black marble plinth signed “P. Tourgueneff”. Dimensions with plinth H 66.5, L 47, W 14 cm, without H 61 cm.
Paris, Pierre-Nicolas Tourgueneff, last quarter 19th C.

Born in Russia, Pierre-Nicolas Tourgueneff (1853 - 1912) had to emigrate to France with his family and his politically persecuted father. He was taught by Emmanuel Frémiet (1824 - 1910), one of the most famous French sculptors of the reign of Napoléon III, and took part in the Salon exhibitions from 1880 onwards. The design for this important equestrian sculpture can probably be dated to the late 1880s or 1890s.
