A Dutch mortar with tendril motifs

Thickly cast yellow gold cast bronze with polished natural patina. The centre decorated with a band of gadrooned ornament flanked above and below by meandering tendrils surrounding flowerheads in round medallions. A wide banderole below the rim inscribed in Latin capital letters: “PETER DIRRICX3 HASSELAER 1600”. With angular faceted handles. The the base slightly rounded due to use, some abrasions. H 15.1, D 16.8 cm, weight c. 6.5 kg. Includes a corresponding baluster-form pestle with a node. L 22.6 cm.
Attributed to Utrecht, 1600.
