A Strasbourg silver magistrate's beaker made for the town of Hagenau

Tapering beaker decorated to resemble snakeskin surrounding a round reserve engraved with the coat-of-arms of the city of Hagenau, dated 1698. The rim with a finely engraved inscription reading “ Raths=becher der Statt Hagenau. Herr Daniel Barth Marschall.” H 11 cm, weight 232 g.
Marks of Jean-Louis I Imlin, c. 1698.

In the second half of the 17th century up until the mid-18th century, it was a tradition in Alsatian towns to present each new member of the town council with a so-called council or magistrate's beaker. The smaller towns, which usually did not have their own silversmith workshops, often commissioned makers in Strasbourg with their production. A beaker by Imlin, dated 1714 and almost identical to ours, is housed in the collection of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Strasbourg. Cf. cat.
