A Nuremberg folding sundial and compass

Made from carved and painted ivory with metal mountings, gilding and a hemp cord. Designed as two rectangular panels with four hinges, the upper face with a compass rose showing the four winds, the inside with a sundial, the base with a compass and lunar clock, the left edge with an aperture for a (missing) wind sock. Engraved on the underside "LIENHART MILER 1617", with a heraldic lily in the compass. When closed H 1.3, W 5.6, D 9.2 m.

Two similar sundials signed by Leonhard Miller and dated slightly later to 1636 and 1645 in the Kunstgewerbesammlung der Stadt Bielefeld/ Stiftung Huelmann (in Syndram, Wissenschaftliche Instrumente und Sonnenuhren, vol. I, Munich 1989, no. 19 f.).
