Simone Pignoni
Allegory of Purity
Oil on canvas (relined). 58 x 48 cm.
The attributes of the lily frond and dove allow the young woman in this work by the Florentine Baroque painter Simone Pignoni to be identified as an allegory of purity (cf. Cesare Ripa: Iconologia, Rome 1603, p. 421: "Purità. Giovanetta, vestita di bianco, con una Colomba in mano"). The painting's composition is comparable to Pignoni's depiction of St. Reparata, the patron saint of Florence, which Francesca Baldassari dates somewhat earlier than the present work in her catalogue raisonné of the artist (Baldassari, op. cit., p. 94, no. 18). Pignoni's portrait of a young woman in the Musée Granet, Aix-en-Provence, and a depiction of Artemisia also display similar compositions (Baldassari, op. cit., p. 93f, no. 17 and p. 95f, no. 20).
