Giovanni Angelo del Maino, studio of

A carved wood Corpus Christi, workshop of Giovanni Angelo del Maino

Carved in the round, the back of the neck and the perizonium hollowed out. With remnants of older polychromy. This expressive Corpus Christi can be closely related to the works of Giovanni Angelo del Maino, one of the leading sculptors of the early Cinquecento in Lombardy. Son of the woodcarver Giacomo del Maino, he was, together with his brother Tiburzio, the head of an extremely productive workshop for polychromed wooden sculptures and altars for over thirty years. In type and style, this Corpus is directly comparable to two other crucifixes in the Pinacoteca Malaspina in Pavia (height 135 cm) and the Parish Church of Missaglia (height 180 cm), which have been assigned by Raffaele Casciaro (op. cit.) to a close collaborator of Giovanni Angelo del Maino and dated as early products of the workshop from around 1490/1495.
Wear with losses to the fingers and toes. Height 145 cm. Width of arms 125 cm.

Provenance

South German private collection.
