An ivory netsuke of a boar with a snake. Late 19th century

Struggling to free itself from a coiled snake that has already wrapped the tip of its tail around the boar’s flank lambently approaching its head. The snake's eyes double inlaid in yellowish and dark brown horn, the boar’s eye pupils in black horn.

The snake and the boar stand opposite (as sixth and twelfth animal) in the zodiac. A simultaneous depiction of both illustrates the wise and thoughtful powers of observation of the snake paired with the courage, strength and ruthless determination of the boar.
Height 3.5 cm; length 4 cm
