Adriaen van Stalbemt

A Village Canal

Oil on copper. 23.5 x 31.5 cm.

In his expertise, Klaus Ertz dates the present work around 1615. At that time Adriaen van Stalbemt was in Antwerp, where he had been a member of the Guild of Saint Luke since 1609. The fact that he was called to the court of the English King Charles I in 1633 testifies to the artist's international renown. Adriaen van Stalbemt was not only among the most well-versed Flemish landscape painters of his era - for Klaus Ertz he was “the best successor to Jan Brueghel the Elder, alongside Jan Brueghel the Younger” - but he was also an accomplished figure painter, as illustrated in the rich and finely painted staffage that populates the present work. The copper panel is slightly dented in the upper right corner with a small loss of pigment in that area.
