Charles (Karel) Beschey

View of a Harbour

Oil on panel. 25 x 32.5 cm.
Signed on the boat in the lower centre: C. Bescheij.

Like those of his contemporaries Théobald Michau and Josef Bredael, Beschey's landscapes are also strongly influenced by the works of Jan Brueghel the Elder.
Beschey was assisted in his search for patrons and buyers for his paintings by his younger brother Balthasar, an art dealer and portraitist who was one of the more important figures in the Antwerp art world. Art lovers met regularly in his house to study the works of the great Dutch and Flemish masters.
Well-preserved and signed works by this painter, such as the two featured in this auction (see also previous lot), have become increasingly rare on the market.

Provenance

Galerie Leonard Koetser (according to a label on the reverse). - German private collection.
