Henri Joseph Harpignies

Paysage De La Campagne Bourguignonne

Oil on canvas. 83 x 62 cm.
Signed lower right: H. Harpignies.

"Henri Joseph Harpignies was born in Valenciennes on the Belgian-French border. His career as an artist began relatively late in life and developed slowly, much like that of his great role model Camille Corot. Both painters found their own unique styles slowly during early visits to Italy.
Riverbanks form the leitmotif of Harpignies' landscape paintings, especially the unique geological features of various regions throughout France: The soft banks of the Allier, the broad banks of the Loire, the quiet waters of the Canal de Briare or the peculiarities of the Burgundian landscape as in the present work. His lyrical and musical approach to landscape painting has been frequently commented upon, presumably not by chance, as Harpignies was also an accomplished cellist.<BR>"
