A Meissen porcelain table centrepiece commemorating Christian Fürchtegott Gellert

Fired in three parts and screw-mounted (the screw mountings slightly loose). Designed as a fluted column crowned by an urn around which stand three amoretti. Adorned with two oval plaques, one with a portrait of the poet, the other inscribed "MEMORIAE C. F. GELLERT. SACRUM". Blue crossed swords mark, model no F. 72, dreher's number 6. With minor chips to the laurel wreath. H 30.3, W 14.3, D 14.3 cm.
Model by Michel Victor Acier, around 1777.

This table centrepiece is the second such work that Meissen dedicated to the great philosopher and poet Christian Fürchtegott Gellert (1715 - 1769). It is a scaled-down version of a larger marble monument by Friedrich Samuel Schlegel, based on a design by Adam Friedrich Oeser, which was erected in Leipzig in 1774 and of which a replica still stands in the promenade grounds.

Provenance

The Dr. Annedore Müller-Hofstede Collection.
