An Islamic mortar with winged lions

Engraved cast bronze with remnants of red pigment over fine natural brown patina, with slight verdigris. Of tapering form with slightly protruding base and rim. Decorated with two rows of lotus bud motifs alternating with rhombus reliefs and finely engraved depictions of winged lions, tendrils and calligraphy. The base slightly dented due to usage, dents to the edges. H 14.8, D 21 cm, includes pestle, weight with pestle c. 10.2 kg.
Attributed to Khorasan/Iran, 12th - 14th C.
