An important French mortar made for Anthoine Jobert

Golden brown cast bronze with shimmering patina. Tapering mortar with a slightly moulded base. Decorated with two large coin plaques bearing portraits of Louis XIV and Marguerite D'Estampes, each inscribed in Latin capital letters: "LVD. XIIII. DG. FR. ET. NAV. REX." and "[M]ARGVERITTE. DESTAMPES.". Each flanked by a large fleur de lys relief and two rectangular plaques with depictions of ladies playing the harp and lute. The broad rim inscribed in Latin capitals: "ANTHOINE IOBERT 1672". With minor wear, a minor loss to the underside due to usage. H 9.3, D 14 cm. weight c. 1.9 kg.
Attributed to Rouen, 1672.

Marguerite D'Estampes (1602 - 1640) married Michel de Beauclerc Marquis d'Estiau in 1629. The coin with a portrait of Marguerite D'Estampes can be attributed to the French sculptor and medal caster Jean Varin (or Warin, 1604 - 1672).
