A French mortar with portraits of Marguerite D'Estampes

Golden brown cast bronze with chocolate brown patina. Decorated with two large plaques depicting Marguerite D'Estampes in profile, each inscribed in Latin capital letters "MARGVERITTE. DESTAMPES." and two rectangular plaques with vases of flowers and delicate mascarons. With minor casting faults to the base and rim and a hairline crack to the rim. H 9.5, D 14 cm, weight c. 2 kg.
Attributed to Rouen, late 17th / early 18th C.

Marguerite D'Estampes (1602 - 1640) married Michel de Beauclerc Marquis d'Estiau in 1629. The medal with her portrait can be attributed to the French sculptor and medal maker Jean Varin, also called Warin (1604 - 1672).
