A large, imposing Renaissance mortar dated 1523

Thickly cast golden brown bronze, the dark brown patina with minor verdigris. Tapering mortar with protruding base and moulded rim. Decorated on the display side with a large, thickly moulded cartouche containing a "house mark" dated on either side "15" and "23". With two further house marks beneath the large handles, the top of the handles engraved with crosses. The base slightly concave due to usage. H 27.5, D 28 cm, weight c. 29 kg.
Attributed to Northern Germany, 1523.
