A Renaissance mortar dated 1553

Golden brown cast bronze with honey coloured patina. Of cylindrical form with a slightly flaring rim. Decorated above the base with a slender band of arabesques and vase (?) motifs, and with two bands of horizontal mouldings and a large shield bearing what appears to be a family coat-of-arms to the display side, monogrammed "S.E." above. Dated "1553" on the reverse. With two slender zoomorphic handles. With some dents to the edges, especially to the basal ring and the lower section. H 17.7, D 16.2 cm, weight c. 5.7 kg.
Southern Germany or Alpine Region, 1553.
