A London bracket clock

Ebony and ebonised wood veneer on softwood corpus, gilt brass, silver plated dial, pierced blued steel hands, glass, original defective red silk lining. Day-running movement with hourly striking on a bell and two melodies on a musical cylinder ("MINUET" and "POLONESE"), with regulation switches for the striking and melodies. Engraved on a small plaque below the dial "John Ellicott London". The back of the case does not open. H with brass handle extended c. 70 cm, W 35, D 23.5 cm.
John Ellicott (1706 - 1772).

The clockmaker John Ellicott (1706 - 1772) was one of the most important clockmakers in England. He invented, among other things, the compensated pendulum and cylinder escapement. He became a member of the Royal Society in 1738.
