Meister des Tucher-Altars, studio of

The Flagellation

Tempera on panel. 49.5 x 38 cm.

This late Gothic panel shows the "Flagellation of Christ", a scene from the Passion, and like its counterpart with the depiction of "Christ carrying the Cross" (also in south Germany but different private ownership: Strieder 1975, op. cit., fig. 10 and Stange 1978, op. cit., no. 64b) it may have formerly been part of a multiple scene altarpiece depicting the Passion.
The panel has been assigned by Peter Strieder to the workshop of the Master of the Tucher Altar, who received his notname after the altar he created around 1440/1450 for the Nuremberg Augustinian Hermit Church. This altar, named after the Nuremberg patrician family Tucher, with its depiction of the Crucifixion of Christ, is today displayed in the Nuremberg Frauenkirche. Peter Strieder dates the present panel in the years before the Tucher Altar was created.
