Jan Miel

Market Scene at the Foot of the Capitoline Hill in Rome

Oil on canvas (relined). 49.5 x 67 cm.

With remnants of collector's seals transferred from the original canvas on the back of the stretcher.

Jan Miel shows a picturesque market scene in Rome, in the foreground he has gathered a cobbler, a market crier, a fruit seller and a carouser in a tavern. To the left is the mighty staircase leading to the Capitol, with the equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius and one of the two horse tamers, populated by beggars and travellers admiring the antiquities. With the warm southern light, the Roman ruins in the background, but also details such as the woman using a marble column as a seat, the artist evokes everyday life in Rome, surrounded by the testimonies of antiquity.
