A stone relief of Saint George, Southern Netherlands, around 1480/1490

Carved three-quarters in the round and partially freestanding, the reverse flattened. With remnants of older polychromy. Pierced high relief depicting the saint in armour riding on a mighty horse, driving a spear into the mouth of a dragon writhing under the hooves of his mount. We see a city in the distance in the rocky landscape backdrop, which is partially obscured by the fluttering drapery of the figure's cloak.
Minor wear throughout. 42 x 35 x 10 cm.
