A carved limewood figure of the Virgin, Upper Rhine Region, around 1500

Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened. With remains of presumably original older polychromy. A depiction of the Virgin from an Annunciation scene, showing Her kneeling beside a prayer stool with a book, facing towards the right but with Her head and torso turned towards the left, to where the Archangel Gabriel would have originally been shown. The fine quality of the carving is especially evident in the facial features, hair, and detailed drapery of the robes and cloak with their deeply carved folds and narrow pleats.
Right hand missing. Wear with minor losses throughout. Insect damage. Height 37 cm.
