Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Tischbein

William Tell flees to his Companions in the Boat

Pen and brush in brown and grey over pencil drawing. 22.5 x 38.9 cm.

During the crossing of the stormy Lake Lucerne, Gessler's ship is in danger of capsizing (IV,1). Tell is known as a good ferryman, so they untie him to save the boat. On the rocky shore, William Tell saves himself with a daring leap from the boat to land. Tischbein may have been inspired to this motif by Friedrich Schiller's play, which first appeared in 1804.
