This drawing repeats the monumental composition of Tischbein's painting of the same name from the Schlossmuseum in Gotha, Tischbein developed the initial ideas for this composition in Zurich in 1871/72, as he reports in detail in his autobiography "Aus meinem Leben" (p. 38/39). The large painting was commissioned by the Duke of Gotha in Rome in 1784.
