Portrait of a Man in a Landscape

Oil on canvas (relined). 103 x 79.5 cm.

Although there is no direct indication that the present portrait is a depiction of an artist, it does give the impression of a self-portrait. Until now it has been attributed to the French painter Sebastien Bourdon, but David Mandrella gives reason to reject this assumption. It could instead be a Dutch or Flemish artist, perhaps active in France. The unusual depiction of the man turned to the side with his head and gaze directed towards the viewer, the reduced colour palette as well as the brisk but confidently placed brushstrokes give this portrait its particular charm.
