Toussaint Gelton was probably taught in the Hague but moved to Copenhagen when he was 27 years old, where he worked in the royal palace studio and was appointed royal portrait painter two years later. He was greatly influenced by the works of Cornelis van Poelenburgh, and the present work provides a fine example of this tendency.
