Pieter Nason

Portrait of a Lady

Oil on canvas (relined). 87.5 x 67.5 cm.

The elegant clothing and the sumptuous pearl jewellery reveal the high social status of the lady depicted, whose identity has unfortunately not yet been established. She is shown half-length against a landscape background and holds a small bouquet of flowers gracefully in her hand. Pieter Nason, the painter of our portrait, was born in Amsterdam, but from 1638/39 he lived in The Hague, the seat of the Dutch government and governor. Here he painted numerous portraits of noblemen, citizens of The Hague and foreign diplomats. In addition, he worked for the governor of Friesland, Wilhelm Friedrich von Nassau-Dietz, and the Brandenburg elector Friedrich Wilhelm.
We would like to thank Prof. Dr. Rudi Ekkart and Claire van den Donk, Blaricum, for confirming the authorship of Pieter Nason on the basis of high-resolution photographs. They date the portrait to the second half of the 60s of the 17th century.

Provenance

Galerie Brinkama, Hamburg. - Acquired in 1985 at the Hannover-Herrenhausen trade fair, subsequently in a North German private collection.
