Unknown Artist of the late 17th century

Portrait of the later King Charles II of Spain as a Child

Oil on canvas (relined). 130 x 100 cm.

Charles II was born in 1661, the son of King Philip IV of Spain and his second wife Maria Anna of Austria. He succeeded his father on the Spanish throne in 1665. His death in 1700 without heirs meant the extinction of the Spanish line of the Habsburgs and triggered the War of the Spanish Succession.
In our full-length portrait, Charles is still depicted as an infante. He stands elevated on a pedestal and wears the Order of the Golden Fleece over an ermine-lined mantle and a voluminous, feather-adorned hat.
