Fritz Klimsch

Blick von der Höhe
Before 1950

Bronze. 43 x 62.5 x cm. Monogrammed 'FK' (ligated) and with foundry mark 'H. NOACK BERLIN' verso. - Vivid black-green patina.

With “Blick von der Höhe” Fritz Klimsch has created a reclining nude whose temperament of gentle serenity defines many of his works. It successfully combines an expression of interiority with that fine sense of the body in motion, at rest and in its proportions which distinguishes his best works.
Reclining nudes like this one, particularly when placed on a plinth modelled to resemble a landscape, are largely exceptional in Klimsch’s work. Evidently the artist had actually already occupied himself with the composition of the present nude in the 1910s; however, the clay model for it was destroyed in the Second World War. After moving to Saig, Klimsch once again began working with the figure on the basis of a photo. Thus, with regard to its composition, this relatively large sculpture forms a remarkable bridge stretching from the sculptors’ early work to his late work. It is exceedingly rare for this important work to be offered on the market.
